Taxpayers in the state of Texas apparently paid a grand total of $129,000 for Gov. Rick Perry to visit Asia for 12 days in June. And I can’t even afford a ticket for a trip to Vietnam for a friend’s wedding. Hoo-rayyyyy.
Rare ‘Asian Unicorn’ Caught in Laos
So, researchers captured the magical saola creature (that looks nothing like a unicorn), and then it dies in captivity. How poetic. They might make a movie about this, with the ending rewritten to depict the researchers voluntarily releasing the saola into the wild and it coming back to find them purely because of a fond affection it had developed over the course of its captivity. I feel like Elijah Wood could be in it.
Map Shows Manhattan Is Full Of White People
I like to categorize findings such as this as NoShit. We know there’s a still a large white population in most major cities of the U.S., but it’s startling to see how few Asians and Hispanics there are on the map by comparison. They probably all live in Cali. Or they’re all in the process of moving to Austin because 1) It’s awesome here; and 2) It’s cheaper here. *Insert unfunny joke about how Asians are cheap.*

Asian-Americans Climb Fashion Industry Ladder
(Props to Richard Chai, Jason Wu and Alexander Wang and all, but I’ve got a bone to pick with this article. Surprise, surprise, I know. As a writer, my first reaction is what is UP with the title? I resent the implication that Asian-Americans are “ladder-climbers,” which has a negative connotation. Also, we just climb ladders, but we don’t ever reach the top? How about something like “Asian-Americans Dominate Fashion Awards.” Now THAT’S a title.
Then, there’s this: “None [of the designers honored] would care to identify their styles as ‘Asian-American.’” (17th paragraph) Maybe that’s because there’s no such thing as “Asian-American style.” Asian-American is a box you check on your census form. It is NOT a style. What’s more, Asian-Americans are Americans, and therefore, have American style. Ain’t that NYT Fashion & Style section always on the ball?)
